Something that I often hear complaints about from people is the notion of thank yous. People will often tell me that they feel insulted or upset that someone didn't say thank you for a gift they received or for a nice deed that someone did for them. However, thank you shouldn't be our expected response and instead, it should just be an added bonus if someone does say the phrase.

As an example, I held the door open for someone the other day while it was raining, taking great pleasure in being pelted by rain drops as I held it. As the person walked by, he didn't say thanks, didn't even acknowledge that I was standing there.

At first I was kind of annoyed that he hadn't made any recognition of the fact that I was doing something for him. However, I thought more about it and it's really a greater flaw in me than in him. He didn't ask me to hold the door open, he hadn't expected me to do the act. Maybe he didn't care that I did it or simply hadn't even noticed that I had.

Thanks is a nice way to show appreciation for what someone has done. But the deed should be done out of goodness, out of a desire to help the person. Thus, it shouldn't make a difference if they acknowledge it or not. If you need a pat on the back to make your actions seem worthwhile, you need to rethink why you're doing them. Give value back to the phrase thank you and don't make it an expected response for everything you do.

Zucchini Pancake Recipe

I know that almost everyone has had potato pancakes but did you ever try zucchini pancakes? When I was a child I was a very picky eater and there was very little things that I would eat; my favorite was potato pancakes. I just loved them so much I could eat them every day, so one day I came home from school and my mother had potato pancakes or so I thought. I sat down to dinner and began eating my favorite food but something seemed a little strange. I said to my mother, "these pancakes taste different" and she said "I used a different kind of potato this time" and so I was satisfied with her explanation and kept on eating my fill as usual. When dinner was over she asked me how I liked dinner and I said it was wonderful as usual, then she replied these were a new zucchini pancake recipe that she just got from a neighbor and decided to try it on me. I was never so surprised in my life and since then I have been making the same zucchini pancake recipe and now I am passing it on to you.

1-3 pound zucchini
½ to ¾ cup flour
1 large egg
½ tsp. Salt
Pinch of pepper or as you like it
Some graded onion (optional)

Wash and peal the skin from the zucchini, slice it down the center, remove the seeds from the center and shred the zucchini into a large bowl and add one egg, salt, pepper, and flour. Mix all the ingredients together.

In a large skillet place about a ¼ inch of oil or even a little less (as you prefer) on your range until hot enough to fry in, place the pancake batter in the frying pan a couple of spoons at a time until you reach the desired size of each zucchini pancake, let fry until a golden brown on each side is reached and the pancake is crispy around the edges, remove the pancakes from the pan and place them on some paper towels to drain the oil from them and then enjoy.

This zucchini pancake recipe will probably be the best you ever had.

How to Make Jja Jang Myun (Korean Noodles With Black Bean Sauce)

One of the immensely popular noodle dishes in Korea is called Jja Jang Myun. Although it is an Asian dish, many foreigners, vastly from America, are beginning to explore these kinds of dishes and are becoming popular in the states as well. This recipe calls for a lot of ingredients, but in small amounts. This means that not all the ingredients are necessary and there are a myriad of ways to make jja jang myun. Here is how to make this delicious Korean dish.

Here are the ingredients that you will need: Asian style noodles (they are usually thicker than the ones Americans are accustomed to), jja jang sauce (it can be found in any Korean market), pork, onions, zucchini, cooking oil, corn starch, black pepper, ginger, and sesame oil.

The first thing is to make the noodles. Simply cook the noodles in boiling water and drain the water out after it's done cooking. After that, rinse it off with cold water to get rid of any excess starch. Leave the noodles aside for now.

Next we have to make the sauce for the noodles. Get a pot and add cooking oil to it, just enough to cover the bottom of the pot. Then add the jja jang sauce and slowly cook it continuously. While doing this, get the pork, onions, and zucchini and cut them into little chunks. You can add the onions and zucchini directly into the pot, but the pork needs to be cooked in a separate pan. If we simply add the pork to the sauce, there is a chance that it will not get fully cooked. After it's cooked, you can then add it into the sauce.

After the sauce is done simmering, simply put your noodles in a bowl and pour the sauce over the noodles.

Although this is the simple way to make Jja Jang Myun, it is also very delicious.

For this version of gimbap, we will use the following ingredients: rolling seaweed (the other type of seaweed is brittle and is not suitable for gimbap, rice, crab meat (in the Korean dish, imitation crab meat is more widely used because real crab meat is too expensive), spinach, pickled radish, sausage(or spam), fishcake, carrots, and a bamboo mat.

Before we start cooking, we need to prepare the ingredients. The imitation crab meat we can leave alone because it's already prepackaged. As for the spinach, blanch the spinach and chop it into small pieces. As for the pickled radish, sausage, fishcake, and carrots, thinly slice them so that you can put a little bit of each into each roll.

Now it's time to actually make the gimbap. Take out a sheet of seaweed and spread rice over it. Leave about and inch and a half on the top of the seaweed so that you can roll it up easily. Put a little bit of each ingredient on a single line and roll it up using your bamboo mat. To keep the ingredients from spilling out, hold them in with your thumb as you are rolling the seaweed.

Political Slant Of North Korean News

When looking at the news articles coming out of North Korea it is clear that they are concerned with keeping the hopes of independent reunification alive. The tops news stories are entitled, "New Era of Reunification and Prosperity Will Come in 2008" and "More Mass Rallies Held." The first article explains that reunification is only possible is both sides are willing to join, this obvious statement does not include the fact that the many people in North Korea have wanted to be reunited to South Korea for a long time and it is the strict and corrupt government of the North that has been making this reunification impossible. One other story spoke out against the Japanese decision to shorten the chain of command for activating their anti missile network. The North Koreans have taken this as a threat and viewed it as Japan flexing their missile muscles.

Compared to news in the United States the articles seem very short and somewhat low on factual information. Furthermore the articles are repetitive when it comes to the issue of independent reunification. One other difference that the Korean news has from American News is that the Korean articles call on the people of the nation to continue struggling for peace, in America it seems there is no need, most of the time, to call on the people of our nation to struggle or for any other reason.

By reading the articles I learned that there is a lot of conflict in North Korea because so many of the articles are talking about desired peace, reunification, and prosperity. But reunification seems like a somewhat false topic because it seems to me that the Government of North Korea has no desire to reunite with South Korea unless they are granted un-realistic rights in the new united country.

There are political slants in the North Korean news particularly in the article involving Japans decision to streamline their anti missile command chain. Until recently the Japanese defense minister had to get approval from the Japanese Prime Minister before they the Defense Minister could enact the anti missile defense, but now the Defense Minister can activate the anti missile defense by himself. This enables Japan to react faster to a missile attack against their nation. North Korea has taken Japans increased faster possible response as Japan getting ready for a preemptive strike. North Korea has taken a simple change in the line of command and twisted it into an excuse to accuse Japan of preparing for an attack.

How K-Pop and Korean Culture Leads to Awesome ESL Lessons

I have lived in Korea for a year and a half, arriving in March 2010 from the US. My reasons for moving to Korea are like many other foreigners: to teach English and travel doing so. ESL, or English as a Second Language, has become the rage in Korea these days and teaching in Korea is incredibly rewarding and fun.

However, there are also challenges as well. Language barriers and cultural differences will be your greatest obstacle. Fortunately, by turning the tables and using their own Korean pop culture, teaching in the country becomes a lot easier.

Take a look at these three steps to help you in your ESL lessons in Korea:

1) Relate to your students. This is actually a universal rule in teaching, but even more so in a foreign country. The way you relate to Korean students is to talk about things they know. Namely, K-pop. K-pop is so engrained within Korean society that nearly every student - regardless of age - knows all the popular songs. Ever had a whole class sing Girls Generation's "Gee" or 2PM's "Hands up"? It's quite a treat to see.

So the lesson here is don't talk about that new US musician that just came out. You'll just get blank stares from the students. Rather, talk about the latest K-pop superstar.

2) Learn the culture. Every country has their own ways of standards. Korea is no exception. Although new teachers will struggle to learn Korea's culture at first, it will aid you in classroom teaching down the road. Don't know what Pepero Day is? Ask one of your Korean co-workers. Do you know the significance of Chuseok Day? Take the time to look it up on Wikipedia. Ever heard of the date 6-25 before? Look up history about the Korean War and find out.

Your students will appreciate your attempts to learn their culture. Thus, they will be more motivated to learn.

3) Take a Korean class. Korean can be difficult at first. Their writing system, Hangul, will look like Egyptian hieroglyphics at first sight. Speaking Korean will also be a game of tongue-twister to many. Yet, even knowing basic words will make the students laugh. Rather than tease you, they will be in awe how a foreigner is learning a new language. They will appreciate the fact that you are learning their native language, much like they are learning yours.

Anyone that takes the time to learn someone else's language shows that you care. And you definitely do.

If you follow these three tips, your students will be motivated to learn in the classroom. Often times, the best way to teach is not having the best theories or mythologies, but rather, to simply relate to the student. To see what makes them tick, their likes, and their hobbies. Once you take a curiosity in learning about them, they'll naturally do the same for you.

A Drop Dead Power Punch From Korean Karate!

This Korean Karate trick is one of the simplest and most deadly moves you will ever find. As simple as it is, it requires exquisite timing, and a number of little bits and pieces of which I am about to tell you. Understanding these fine points, and working on the thing a bit, and you are going to have one of the most powerful punches in your martial arts arsenal.

I discovered this trick in the form which is sometimes called Heian Five, it happens right after you execute a crescent kick and low block. You are now standing in a horse stance, and you swing the right arm across the body to cover the left side of the body with a palm block. You then perform a left fist to the left, and that is what I have labeled the power punch.

You can perform this technique exactly as it is in the form, and it will work with plenty of power. But there are ways to to develop even more power, and to make it even more functional. And we want more functional, because we want to make this technique so smooth that we can use it in street situations.

Have your partner stand opposite you, handshake distance away. Have him step forward with his right leg and execute a fist to your face with his right hand. You step back with your left foot into a back stance as you perform a left palm block, this causes your partner's right hand to pass in front of you, and this sets up his body for the counter.

To counter, turn your body and feet into a horse stance as you perform a right punch to his ribcage. Now, this has got to be done quick and sharp, and you have to drop your weight and snap those hips, and you are going to find that this technique, if executed correctly, is going to smash his ribs to splinters. In addition, if you happen to use a little precision, and this will happen naturally over time, you can stick your fingers directly into his armpit.

The thing is that you must have perfect CBM, Coordinated Body Motion, in your strike. CBM is when all body parts move at the same time. Thus, you strike with a couple of hundred pounds of mass (assuming you weigh a couple of hundred pounds), and not just the weight of your arm.

In addition, you must make sure your stance is at the correct distance so that your arm is nearly straightened out, only has a couple of inches to extend, when you strike him. If you decide to use the flattened out hand, go slower, and add fingertip push ups to your daily exercises. If you decide to go deep and do a throw, you can set your legs so that your punched out arm can sweep him over your horse.

I always found this to be an intoxicating trick, quick and easy, and I love the feeling of moving in quick and light and then dropped the deep power into the last snap of the fist. The damage to that mugger is going to be wonderful, and it is very usable on the street, and can be adjusted or modified as one needs. The official monicker for this trick, in my system, which is a slight modification of Korean Karate, is The Power Punch, hope you like it.

Basic Facts About The Korean Language

The Korean language is spoken by the entire population of North Korea and South Korea. While there are certainly differences between the Korean dialect spoken in the north and the one spoken in the south, the dialects are mutually understandable.

The Korean language is also used in the autonomous region of Yanbian which is in the southern province of Heilongjiang in China.

Approximately 78 million people speak Korean, including communities of immigrants now living in the former Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, United States, Brazil, Japan, United Kingdom, as well as the Philippines.

The so called denomination of the language varies between both Koreas. In South Korea it is usually called Hangugeo or Hangungmal. Officially the name given to Korean is gugeo which means "language of the country.Colloquially speaking it is also referred to as urimal that literally means "our language."

North Korean typically refer to the Korean language as Chos nmal although it is also called urimal. The standard of North Korea is based on the way it is spoken in the capital P'yngyang while in the south the standard is the way it is spoken in Seoul. The differences between these two forms of the Korean language does not make it impossible for speakers of either group to communicate with each other because the differences are more or less equivalent to the Spanish spoken in Spain and the Spanish spoken in Latin America.

The origin of the Korean language is not yet clear. Some linguists say it belongs to the group of the Altaican languages whilst others put it in the same group with the Japanese language in one single group: Korean-Japanese.

Since neither of these two views have been demonstrated decisively, those who do study the language prefer to refer to the Korean language as a language significantly distinct from the aforementioned groups. From a morphological point of view, the Korean language uses agglutination which is the process of adding affixes to the base of a word. Korean maintains a grammatical syntax whose base is Subject-Object-Verb. Japanese, Vietnamese, and the Korean languages are influenced heavily by the Chinese language.

The system utilized for writing Korean is known as Hangeul, and it is at the same time an alphabetical and phonetic system. It is quite common to use the vocabularies that come either directly or indirectly from the Chinese language.

How to Make Sikhye (Korean Rice Drink)

Sikhye is a traditional Korean drink made from barley malt powder that has been gaining popularity all over the world. Although it does take a long time to make sikhye, it is well worth it as sikhye is incredibly sweet as well as thirst quenching. Here is how to make the traditional Korean drink.

These are the ingredients that you will need to make Sikhye: package of barley malt powder, a cup of rice, a couple cups of sugar, a lot of water, pine nuts ( for texture).

The first step is to prepare the base of the drink. For this, we will mix the package of barley malt powder with the water. We will need roughly twenty five cups of water. Let this sit until all the dregs from the malt powder sink to the bottom.

Leave it aside and now it's time to move on to the rice. If you know how to make rice using a rice cooker, then it's easy. If not, you'll have to look it up yourself, unforunately, because I only know how to use a rice cooker. Anyways, after the rice is done in the rice cooker, wash the water so that the leftover starch is washed away. This allows the rice, once in the drink, to float to the top instead of sticking to the bottom.

Once the barley malt powder/water mixture has separated, pour the clear liquid part into the rice cooker along with the washed rice and a cup of sugar. Put the rice cooker on warm for about four to five hours. After the four to five hours are up, strain the rice and rinse it in cold water. Then leave the rice aside for now.

Now, take the liquid that was inside the rice cooker and bring it to a boil in a pot. This is where you will add the second cup of sugar. Once it is boiled, remove the layer of foam on the top and keep it in the refrigerator.

Once the rice and the liquid is cold, you can serve it. Pour some of the liquid into a cup and add some rice to the drink. To top it off, add some pine nuts on top. This drink will make your friends and family go wow for more. Teach them how to make this wonderful drink today.

Korean Not Real Kimchi Salad

I never really liked kimchi to be honest. You know, that spicy pickled cabbage with specks of red all over. The first day I tried it (the same night my mom came home with Korean style grilled chicken!), I almost finished the whole carton of it. Yes, it is that good. It's sweet, crisp, light, and refreshing - the perfect appetizer for any occasion. I highly recommend everyone to try this dish. You won't be disappointed.

Here's the recipe!

Ingredients

1 lb cabbage

1 Tbsp salt

8 oz radish

1 carrot

2 cucumbers

6 Tbsp vinegar

3 Tbsp sugar

1 tsp salt

1 Tbsp Korean brand hot pepper paste (adjust amount to taste)

Minced garlic (adjust amount to taste)

Sesame seeds (adjust amount to taste)

Cut off cabbage root and take off each leaf carefully from cabbage. Boil the whole cabbage (until it is cooked but still with a snap) and then put leaves in an ice bath. Cut the radish and carrot into julienne strips. Cut the iced cabbage into thin strips. Mix vinegar, sugar, salt, hot pepper paste, and garlic in a bowl. Marinate all the veggies in the dressing and garnish with sesame seeds.

The History of Hyundai

If you live in North America, you likely are now very familiar with the Hyundai line of vehicles. Back in 1986, the first Hyundai was introduced to the market - an Excel - and the company's line up has changed dramatically since that time. Hyundai produces much more than cars; in fact, by the end of the last century Hyundai became one of the largest companies in the world. Let's take a look at this Korean based multinational corporation and the company behind Hyundai vehicles.

It was back in 1946, just one year removed from Imperial Japan's occupation of the Korean peninsula, that a new company was birthed in what is now known as South Korea. Hyundai Motor Industrial Company was founded by Chung Ju-yung, a child of northern Korean peasant farmers, and in 1947 Ju-yung launched a second company, Hyundai Civil Industries. Self educated, Ju-yung transformed the entire Korean economy with the tight control he exerted over his Hyundai companies.

The first Hyundai business was tasked with building automobiles while the second Hyundai company concentrated on construction. Indeed, much of modern South Korea's infrastructure was built by Hyundai in the period after the cessation of the Korean War in 1953 and on through the 1970s. Dams, an expressway, a shipbuilding yard, and a nuclear power plant were all built by Hyundai Civil Industries, while Hyundai Motors produced cars made primarily from Japanese components. Hyundai's influence stretched far beyond the Korean peninsula as the company won contracts to build an expressway in Thailand and a major port in Saudi Arabia. Clearly, Hyundai dominated the Korean market and quickly became a major player on the international scene.

By the 1970s Hyundai began to build vessels as well as shipyards and by 1986 Hyundai produced its first vehicle made entirely from Korean components. From the 1980s forward Hyundai added additional specialties including the building of semiconductors and magnetic levitation trains.

All hasn't been glossy for the company, however. Decades of labor problems culminating in new employee safety standards put in place from the 1990s on, tempered the Hyundai mystique. Indeed, up to that time the company was cited for having the worst safety standards of any corporation in the industrialized world.

Cars were another source of problems for what became known as the Hyundai Group. Although now manufacturing their own vehicles, the quality of Hyundai vehicles for the first decade was considered by automobile experts to be sub-par. Today, Hyundai vehicles and Hyundai parts are, for the most part, slightly above average in quality compared to the industry as a whole.

With Chung Ju-yung's death in 2001, Hyundai was divided up into three separate companies: Hyundai Heavy Industries, the Hyundai Motor Group, and Hyundai Engineering and Construction. Today, all three Hyundai companies continue to compete successfully in the global marketplace thanks to the vision of a peasant farmer.

Koreans are having far fewer children than in the past, with the average birth rate, 1.41 children per person, between 2000 to 2005 (according to the United Nations Population Fund), putting Korea 26th in the world, for birth rates. With a decreasing young population and increasing old population, despite the potential for problems with pension funds for the older Koreans, the long-term future looks healthy. With a shortage of young people entering the work market, the problem of graduate employment will eventually decrease by natural means and companies will gradually need to keep older employees, as graduate numbers become less. The knowledge and experience of older businessmen and women will likely do companies no harm. Very similar to in the UK, pension funds is an issue in government, with concerns over having enough to cover state pensions in the future.

Reports in European media about Korea, reflect positive thoughts about the future economic growth. Koreans themselves can sometimes be pessimistic about the future and Korean media sometimes seems to reflect this. Concern for example, that another crisis such as the IMF crisis will happen again, or that problems with the American economy in the future will affect the Korean economy, are understandable. Nevertheless, Korea has risen from the ashes to become one of the top economies in Asia and there seems no reason why they cannot remain strong.

My concern is that when the two Koreas do eventually re-unify (as I am sure they will at some point), a huge burden will be placed monetarily on the South. South Korea has attempted to consider this issue and an attempt has been made in the last 8 years to send certain aid items North of the border, i.e. for agriculturally use, in order to improve the standard of living and to try and bring the level in the North closer to that in the South. Such issues have been addressed and most students told me that, if it meant Korea re-unifying, then they would not mind the economic burden.

There was one expression I heard a few times in Korea and if it is true, many men in Korea will likely still have something to be happy about in economic hardship. It is an interesting expression.

How to Make Soojaebi (Korean Noodles Made Using Flour)

Soojaebi was first eaten traditionally by Koreans when they were lacking in money and had nothing to eat.

Soojaebi was made from kneading flour with water and cooking this doughy mixture in an anchovy based soup.

This dish has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Soojaebi is now one of the recipes listed on the menus of high class restaurants. Here is how to make this wonderful dish.

Here are the ingredients that you will need: all purpose flour, eggs, onions, garlic, mushrooms (any kind will work), potatoes, black pepper, salt, carrots, zucchini, and seafood (optional)

First, we need to make the dough for the noodles. To make the dough, mix 4 cups of flour with 2 cups of water.

Knead it until it becomes a not too watery dough. Wrap it in some plastic and leave it aside for now.

While the dough is sitting, chop up your vegetables. chop up the onions, mushrooms, potatoes, zucchini, and carrots roughly or however you would like to chop them as it doesn't really matter for this dish.

To make your soup for the dish, boil a large pot of water with white onions, garlic, scallions, pepper, and salt.

Let this simmer for about half an hour so that the broth gets the full flavor of the onions. Now you can either drain the broth to only have the stock or just leave it in as is.

Once the broth is done, you can add the vegetables. With the vegetables, add a bit of soy sauce for flavoring and let the mixture sit so that all the vegetables soak in the flavor of the broth.

Next, whisk your eggs and add them bit by bit while stirring the soup so that the eggs don't form big clumps.

Next, raise the heat on your soup and get your dough. Get a chunk of dough in one hand, and with the other, rip off pieces of the dough. Try to make the dough as thin and flat as possible and add them into the soup.

Once the dough rises to the top of the soup, that means that they are fully cooked.

Let it cook for a little bit more, and you're done. This is a long recipe, but worth it once you succeed.
