Acupuncture and Alternative Therapies For Digestive Disorders

It is estimated that approximately 62 million Americans experience digestive problems on an ongoing basis. This is due to the harmful repercussions of the standard American diet on our population coupled with the high level of stress that the average American experiences. Digestive problems can range from minor annoyances, such as gas and bloating, to life-threatening illnesses, such as crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, unremitting diarrhea, and various cancers that target digestive organs. Whatever the case, it is always worth being proactive about our digestive health. The information contained in this article on acupuncture and natural therapies should definitely get you going in the right direction, not only with your digestion but also with your health in general. Let's take a look at a few common disorders and what can be done about them.

1. Constipation: The standard American diet can easily lead to chronic constipation. This diet is low in fiber and antioxidants and high in difficult to digest additives and refined ingredients. Many, many people are constipated and they don't even know it. They may have regular bowel movements, but they are still not flushing their systems thoroughly, which creates intestinal toxicity. Intestinal cleansing is often a top priority in healing numerous chronic health problems. There are several natural herbal remedies and nutritional supplements that can relieve constipation and heal the underlying imbalances.

Korean

Chinese herbal formulas such as ma zi ren wan and run chang wan are gentle laxatives that are not habit forming.

Aloe vera juice reduces inflammation and promotes peristalsis (smooth muscle contraction in the bowel).

  • Triphala is an Ayurvedic herbal complex that gently eases constipation and removes stagnant waste from the intestines.
  • Psyllium husk is a high fiber product that alleviates constipation.
  • Flax meal and seed are excellent high fiber sources for constipation. Senna leaf is useful for severe constipation.

2. Diarrhea: Chronic diarrhea can be dangerous for your health. It is still one of the leading causes of death in the world. Diarrhea is related to spleen weakness or intestinal inflammation. It is always a top treatment priority to heal this condition. Stress and anxiety can trigger regular bouts of diarrhea, as can processed and refined foods. Here are a few basic remedies for diarrhea:

Chinese herbal formulas such as bu zhong yi qi tang (ginseng and astragalus), si jun qi tang (4 Gentlemen), liu jun zi tang (6 Gentlemen), and jin gui shen qi tang (rehmannia 8) are helpful for alleviating diarrhea due to deficiency. Tong xie yao feng, Isatis Cooling, and jia wei xiao yao wan are helpful for diarrhea due to heat and inflammation.

Western herbs such as slippery elm, chamomile, peppermint, and ginger harmonize and soothe the stomach to stop diarrhea.

Probiotics such as acidophilus are useful as long-term adjuncts in treating diarrhea.

3. Bloating and gas: These symptoms tend to arise from eating too much or too fast, excessive stress, refined foods, coffee and alcohol, and sugar. Aside from slowing down and eating less of these foods, here are a few herbal suggestions:

4. Irritable bowel Syndrome: IBS is a very common problem that affects millions of Americans. Doctors will often diagnose IBS when the patient's symptoms don't seem to match up with anything else, so they call it irritable bowel. This disorder is characterized by bowels fluctuating from constipation to diarrhea with intermittent abdominal pain or distention. People with IBS tend to be sensitive to a variety of foods including high fiber foods, refined sugar, wheat, and gluten products. Symptoms can continue indefinitely and can be resistant to conventional treatments. I have treated several patients with IBS, usually with very positive results. Acupuncture theory asserts that IBS typically involves a disharmony between the liver and the spleen. The liver becomes hyperactive due to stress, anger, and frustration, which causes it to weaken the spleen, causing loose bowels and fatigue. Treatment involves relaxing the liver and strengthening the spleen.

Herbal formulas such as Irritease by K'An Herbals and Isatis Cooling by Health Concerns have proven helpful. In general, I recommend committing to weekly acupuncture and herbal treatment for 4-8 visits, depending upon the severity and duration of your symptoms.

Most digestive disorders respond very well to consistent acupuncture and herbal treatment. Making dietary changes that restore and detoxify the gut also enhances treatment progress. Digestion is one of the main reference points for gauging one's overall health. If there are weaknesses or imbalances here, it is likely that one's overall health is compromised. Maintaining healthy digestion is an essential component in our quest for optimal health.

I should mention that for those of you suffering from crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or colon cancer, it is definitely best to seek out professional alternative and allopathic medical treatment. These diseases are simply too involved to offer blanket solutions in this article. There are many powerful natural remedies for these diseases, but their application is specific to your unique needs.

LG Smart TV Vs Samsung Smart LED TV

Smart TVs have the potential to replace conventional TVs. This innovative gadget offers a lot of features a conventional TV set could not give, taking things a step further. It is equipped with advanced computing technology which includes internet integration, a set-top box, gaming console, Blu-ray player, local hard drive storage, and other devices. In other words, a smart television is the ultimate one-stop home entertainment center.

Many renowned electronics manufacturers have tried their hands at making their own smart TVs. Some companies even join hands to manufacture this amazing entertainment gadget. Logitech, Sony, Intel, and Google, for example, are working together to produce an Android-based Google TV. Two giant electronics manufacturers LG and Samsung are currently at the forefront. Both companies also produce their own signature smart televisions. A lot of people tend to compare products from LG and Samsung because they are both Korean based companies and both target the same market.

Korean

The LG Smart TV features four exciting options: the Launcher Bar, Premium Content, TV Live, and TV Apps. Premium contents for this TV are provided by partners CinemaNow and Netflix. In addition, LG also provides a vast collection of apps ranging from educational to gaming purposes. The Smart Share feature in this product allows the users to wirelessly stream videos and listen to music from compatible devices of from their computer. To access the content without using the computer, the user should only activate the embedded web surfer. In addition, users can also access Picasa Photo Viewer, Google Maps, YouTube, Amazon VOD, AP, and Twitter as well. On top of that, the LG Smart TV is more affordable than most smart TVs sold in the market

The Samsung Smart LED TV, on the other hand, offers more exciting features. At least five smart options are available: Smart Search, Smart Chat, Smart Video, Smart Design, and Smart 3D. And like the LG Smart TV, the features provided in this Samsung TV also enable the users to access various movies, music, TV programs, videos, and games, not to mention online contents and social networking sites. Smart 3D is probably the best feature of Samsung Smart LED TV. This state of the art gadget also boasts vivid image and excellent color qualities unlike other television displays. This TV is more expensive than the LG Smart TV. But if you are looking for an excellent image quality, this is the perfect smart TV for you.

Why Do I Fart So Much? Find Out the #1 Cause of Excessive Gas & Farting!

There's a very common cause for people who have excessive gas & farting which most people are unaware of because most doctors are uneducated regarding it. If you frequently ask "why do I fart so much?" Then I have quite the surprising find for you as I'll explain the #1 cause of gas that you're completely unaware of. Best of all by eliminating this you'll also eliminate over 95% of all your other health complaints!

Why do I Fart So Much?

Korean

This epidemic is known as candida and it's a yeast that exists in essentially everyone. In some people it's a larger problem than in others, however the bottom line is always the same in that the same approach must be taken to be sure it is fully eliminated. This involves the use of natural anti-fungals, a strict anti-candida diet while also using nutritional therapy to boost the health of the body. This is enough to help eliminate the current overgrowth although without going after what created it in the first place you can never fully be free from it.

Fortunately there are natural therapies not normally associated with candida which can allow your body to control it entirely on its own.

How Candida Creates Gas!

Candida overgrows in the bowels by a process known as fermentation, now if you remember anything from biology back in school this process creates a lot of gas as a result. This gas needs to find a way out and quite often it's either through belching or farting, the latter being much more common. Quite often as well those who suffer from candida have issues with bowel obstruction as they don't always experience 3 bowel movements per day which will lead to a build up of waste in the colon, only making matters worse.

So what's the solution? Clear your bowel, clean out candida from the body while also doing natural therapies which will prevent it from ever causing problems again!

Why Are My Orchid Leaves Turning Yellow?

This month I want to talk about yellowing orchid leaves. There are many reasons why leaves turn yellow. This is a common question that we receive. Orchids like all other plants age and during that aging process the older leaves will turn yellow and die. Remember we are saying the older leaves of the orchid plant, those toward the bottom.

Let's turn our attention to leaves that are not old and not on the bottom of the plant but newer leaves on the orchid. Some of the other reasons include:

Korean

1. Bacterial or fungal disease

2. Too much light

3. Too much water

4. Environmental

Bacterial or fungal disease on orchid leaves will show itself as irregular yellow spots on the leaf. In other words it will not involve the whole leaf but just spots on the orchid leaf. If there is a black growing edge to the yellow spotting then this is caused by a fungus.

The treatment for the bacterial infection is with Physan which can be purchased at a nursery. For the fungal infection a fungicide for plants or orchids will do fine.

Yes, yellow leaves on orchid plants can be due to too much light. In fact, in the mid day summer sun orchids can actually get burned spots on their leaves. This may be one of the more common reasons for yellowing of leaves.

Place the plant in indirect bright light for a while and it will recover just fine. The leaves will remain yellowed and will not turn back to green.

Although, not usual, too much water can will also cause the leaves to turn yellow. But in addition there will be evidence of "rot" as well. Too much watering can cause a fungal infection and this is seen with black areas within the yellow area as seen in this picture.

Stop watering for a week or two and then only once a week after. You need to treat for a fungal infection.

What sort of environmental issues cause yellowing of orchid leaves? The biggest is cold weather. Yes, when orchids are subject to cold weather their leaves can turn yellow due to the damage caused. This can affect the whole leave(s) or parts of them.

Also, certain environmental toxins can create this condition such as paint fumes or cleaning fumes. When these are being used be sure to get air circulation moving around the orchids.

As you can see there are quite a few causes of yellowing leaves. Treat the easy ones first unless you suspect a more serious problem like a fungal or bacterial infection. If you have questions consult a good nursery or your local orchid society.

Economic Status of the United States in 1950

Introduction

Emerging victorious from World War II five years earlier, the United States in 1950 was reaping the benefits of a growing economy - benefits that were actually derived out of the country's participation in the War. The destruction and mayhem brought by the global conflict also brought with it several positive contributions to the economy. Some would even argue that the country's participation in World War II actually saved it from the Great Depression.

Korean

To understand the economic boom of the 1950s it is necessary to appreciate the positive impacts that were borne out of World War II. The foundation for the economic expansion and growth experienced in 1950 and several years after that were laid during World War II.

To fund and support the country's war time efforts, it had to recruit millions of American soldiers to be sent to the war front as well as to be stationed at home. Factories had to be built to produce war materiel - guns and ammunitions, military transport, tanks, fighter planes and bombers, etc. To man the factories women and older people had to be recruited as most of the able-bodied men were at war. WWII created jobs and gave life to many industries and energized a nation. Among the industries that prospered during and immediately after the war were the newspaper industry, the agriculture industry and even Hollywood. Industries that produced transport and plant machineries also prospered. Throughout the War, women, for the first time, were given the opportunity to work outside their homes and participate in nation building. The participation of the women in the labor force started to increase during this time.

The War also provided opportunities that would later be manifested in the 1950s. Take for example many of America's products went overseas - introducing themselves to new markets.

Many had actually feared that the end of the War would lead the country back to depression. With production of military supplies coming to an end, this fear had its basis - for the entire economy was propped up by all that had to do with the global conflict.
Fortunately, this was not the case. The victory relished by the nation brought about confidence in the government and the economy. The common consumer best exhibited this confidence as the strong consumer demand spurred economic growth after the War.

Leading towards the 1950s, industries that experienced a surge in growth included the automobile industry and the housing industry, and new industries experienced fantastic births - industries such as aviation and electronics.

There was also another outcome of WWII that contributed to post War growth - the Cold War between U.S. and the U.S.S.R.

Many of the military industries that sprouted during the war continued to do big business after it. As communist block emerged as a military power in Europe, America had to arm itself against what it considered as a threat. Huge investments were made in the defense of the country. Such investments meant jobs, factories, huge spending - all contributed to the boom of the 1950s.

The economic success of the country probably influenced its leaders to advocate the replication of an open economy at the international level. This is best evidenced by the country's spearheading the establishment of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Gross Domestic Product and Per Capita GDP

In 1950, the country's GDP was at 3.8 Billion (in current dollars). At that time, Per Capita GDP was ,573.00 - making the United States the number one country world wide in this aspect. By 1996, GDP was at .194 Trillion. Per Capita GDP was at ,800.00 - however, the country ranked only at 10th place world wide in this respect.

Post World War II scenario showed that too few economies survive the war while a great majority, especially in Europe, was greatly affected. Many developments starting in the late 1970s toward the early 2000s enabled other countries to overtake the U.S. in terms of Per Capita GDP.

As Per Capita GDP is influenced by population, countries that had significant economic growth coupled with low birth rate were able to surpass the U.S. in this indicator. However, the U.S. remains the most powerful economy in 2007 taking into consideration other indicators.

Employment and Unemployment

In 1950, the civilian labor force was about 58 million strong. Only 5.3 percent of the labor force was unemployed. 41.6 million of the labor force at that time were males, while only 17.34 million were females. By 1996, the labor force grew to about 142 million while unemployment rate as at 5 percent. 76 million were males while 66 million were females in the labor force. In the 1950s, the number of workers in the services sector caught up with workers in goods production industries. The same time also saw the rise of white-collar jobs and the strengthening of labor unions. Awareness on labor rights was on a rise. The biggest impact experienced by the labor force was the increase in women's participation in employment activities. Accordingly, women have literally poured into the labor force starting in 1950. By 1990, women's participation in the labor force would nearly double. On the other hand, men's participation would drop over time.

Per Capita Personal Income

In 1950 the Per Capita Personal Income was pegged at ,501.00. By 2006 this rose to about ,600.00. Though marked by huge difference in amount, it can be noted that ,501.00 in 1950 could by more goods and services than the ,600 in 2006 as illustrated by the CPI rates for both years.

Consumer Price Index and Inflation

With 1967 as base year, CPI in 1950 was registered at 72.1 - meaning that a basket of goods and services bought in 1950 were 72.1 percent of the price of the same goods and services bought in 1967. By 2006, the CPI was at 603.5. This meant that the same basket of goods and services bought in 1967 would cost 603.5 percent more in 2006. Inflation rate in 1950 was at a steady 1.09 percent. In 2006 the rate was at 3.24 percent.

Emerging Industries

1950 saw the emergence of new industries that were anchored on new technologies. Among these is the aerospace industry. The great success of the heavy bombers during the war emphasized importance on innovation. Improvements in engine design, metallurgy, and arms technology helped advance the industry as well as improve manufacturing procedures.

The onset of the Cold War ensured that the industry was there to stay. At its peak, the industry hired hundreds of thousands of workers in four major factories. The industry was also fueled by a billion government spending.

Other industries that grew during this time were boosted by other industries. Take for instance the housing boom experienced after war. New homes meant additional furniture and appliances as well as new cars. The consumer-led growth likewise spread to other areas. The introduction of television to the masses spurred the growth in electronics.
There were also after effects in the growth of industries. As the demand for homes and cars increased, many Americans were lured out of central cities to the suburbs. The construction of better highways also contributed to these phenomena.
Farmers though were facing tough times. As people left farm lands, lesser people were left behind to do farm work. This led to a drop in the productivity of the farm sector.

Innovations and the Transformation of Business

At a personal level, 1950 saw the introduction of the first hand held T.V. remote control - a device that would be seen as a necessity in many households for years to come. Color TV also emerged through the issuance of a license to CBS Network. Another innovation is the introduction of the first credit card - Diners - also an item that would come across as a necessity in modern times.

The first pagers were also developed in 1950.

In the business front, 1950 would usher in an era marked by consolidation of large companies. Businesses would combine to create bigger, greater businesses. Example, International Telephone and Telegraph bought Sheraton Hotels, Continental Banking, Hartford Fire Insurance, Avis Rent-a-Car, and other companies.

Notable Events and Personalities

Notable events of 1950 included the following:

Start of the Korean War - influenced greatly by the U.S. and USSR at opposite sides, North and South Korea would tangle in a three-year war that highlighted the tension during Cold War regime.

Development of the Hydrogen Bomb - raged by the atomic bomb testing by USSR, the government pursued the development of a hydrogen bomb.

Senator Joseph McCarthy - started the Red Scare in halls of the U.S. Senate - making accusations that the State Department was filled with Communists or their sympathizers. The Senator's actions led to the adoption of the term McCarthyism - describing intense anti-Communists sentiments.

This period coincided with and fueled the onset of the Cold War between America and the USSR. Thousands of Americans were accused of being Communists or sympathizers during this time - Americans in various sectors of the society. History would later judge these accusations as reckless and baseless. While Senator McCarthy gained considerable media mileage at the start of his "campaigns," he would be later unmasked as a grandstanding antic who had little or no evidence to back up his accusations. Many of the people Senator McCarthy accused suffered greatly. Many loss their jobs, had their careers ruined while some were even unjustly imprisoned.

Conclusion

The end of World War II led to the end of the Great Depression and the start of a long period of economic expansion through the 1950s. It is quite ironical that the most destructive war in history would contribute to the emergence of the strongest and biggest economy in the world. The confidence on the economy was obviously brought about by the country's victory in the War. Tempered by strong collaboration between the government, businesses and the consumers, the U.S. emerged from the War a lot stronger and economically strengthened. Industrial expansion during wartime brought economic impetus that would be carried on even after WWII. The fact that most of the major economies were slow to recover from the after effects of the conflict placed the United States at absolute and relative advantage over both its allies and its enemies.

Male Libido - The Best 4 Natural Supplements To Increase Male Libido

Many natural supplements sold to boost male libido, simply don't work and are sold without any medical substantiation whatsoever.

The good news however is, that some do, you just need to pick the right ones and here we are going to give you the best one of all, which has been medically proven to increase male libido.

Korean

Male Libido first things first

Male libido does not work in isolation from the rest of your body. A whole host of inputs are present that go into making you feel in the mood.

Your moods and your diet all affect your libido. Big passion killers include:

Tiredness, stress, depression, a poor diet, alcohol, smoking and drugs.

If you suffer from any of the above then you need to make sure that you improve your diet, get some exercise (a great stress booster) and cut down on drugs cigarettes and alcohol.

What is L- Arginine?

L-Arginine is a non essential amino acid and is necessary for normal functioning of the pituitary gland.

The production of L-Arginine decreases with age and many experts believe this is responsible for many degenerative processes that are related to aging.

Research shows it plays role in maintaining wellbeing and particularly male sexual health.

Why it is so important

In 1988 researchers discovered that L-arginine's wide-ranging health benefits were due primarily to its role as a precursor to nitric oxide.

L-arginine stimulates the release of nitric oxide from the walls of blood vessels, improving circulation.

L-arginine is a particularly important amino acid for overall circulatory health and is sold as natural supplement for sexual health.

L-arginine has been proven to help increase blood flow to the penis, much like Viagra does, and the difference is it does it naturally.

How an erection occurs.

Nitric oxide is produced in response to messages from the brain; which triggers the release of nitric acid, which causes the smooth muscles of the spongy tissues inside the penis to relax, the tissue then fills with blood and an erection occurs.

L-arginine is so effective because it helps with the release of nitric oxide. Low levels of L-Arginine can lead therefore to decreased libido.

Medical proof

A study published in 1994 showed an 80% improvement in the erectile function of men given 2.8 grams of argentine a day after a two weeks period

Combining L-Argentine with other herbs has also shown impressive results.

Combining L-Argentine with the tree bark Pycnogenol has seen over a 90% increase in male libido in recent studies.

Other great products for male libido

There are other natural supplements that can be taken to increase male libido and two that are very popular are Ginseng and Gingko Bilbao

Ginseng

Korean Ginseng has been used in China as a sexual tonic for over 7000 years.

Korean ginseng in particular is taken for its ability to boost energy and sex drive. It also helps you adapt to physical or emotional stress and fatigue and helps improve blood flow

Gingko Bilbao

Is used to improve blood flow around the body including to the genitals and also functions as an anti-oxidant in the body.

Ginkgo has long been thought to heal male impotence, and is a standard herbal remedy prescribed in China and is now popular worldwide.

A combination of the above four natural supplements will help increase male libido

As we have said already, healthy sex drive depends on all round well being, as well as the realize of nitric oxide to create an erection.

The above four supplements all help with blood circulation and the realize of nitric oxide and this is why they are the best natural supplements for increasing male sex drive.

Irregular Past Tense Spanish Verbs

In Spanish there are really just two past tenses the student needs to be concerned about and they are the preterite and the imperfect tenses.

The Imperfect Tense

Korean

The imperfect tense is used to refer to actions in the past that occurred repeatedly such as,

I used to walk home every day - Caminaba cada día

It is also used to refer to actions in the past that happened over an extended period.

I used to eat paella frequently - Comía frecuentemente paella

And for "setting the stage" for a past event.

We were coming home when we saw Juan - Veníamos para casa cuando vimos a Juan

Non physical actions such as feelings and thoughts will also usually use the imperfect tense,

Juan was feeling sick - Juan estaba enfermo

In Spanish there are two sets of regular verb endings for the imperfect tense, one is used for verbs ending in -ar and the other for verbs ending in -er and -ir, these ending rarely change even when used with irregular verbs and are as follows;

'Regular' Spanish irregular verbs in the imperfect tense:

Enviar (to send)

Yo envi -aba (I was sending); tú envi -abas (you were sending); el/ella envi -aba (he/she was sending); nosotros envi -ábamos (we were sending); vosotros envi -abais (you were sending) and ellos/ellas envi -aban (they were sending)

Tener (to have)

Yo ten -ía (I was having); tú ten -ías (you were having); el/ella ten -ía (he/she was having); nosotros ten -íamos (we were having); vosotros ten -íais (you were having) and ellos/ellas ten -ían (they were having)

Decir (to say)

Yo dec -ía (I was saying); tú dec -ías (you were saying); el/ella dec -ía (he/she was saying); nosotros dec -íamos (we were saying); vosotros dec -íais (you were saying) and ellos/ellas dec -ían (they were saying)

There are two exceptions to the regular pattern of the imperfect tense and they are the important verbs 'ser' (to be) and 'ir' (to go) which will both need learning independently and are conjugated as follows;

Ser (to be)

Yo er -a (I was); tú er -as (you were); el/ella er -a (he/she was ); nosotros ér -amos (we were); vosotros er -ais (you were) and ellos/ellas er -an (they were)

Ir (to go)

Yo ib -a (I was going); tú ib -as (you were going); el/ella ib -a (he/she was going); nosotros íb -amos (we were going); vosotros ib -ais (you were going) and ellos/ellas ib -an (they were going)

The Preterite Tense

The preterite tense is used frequently and is used to describe past action that are seen as having been completed. As with the Imperfect tense the stem of the verb is used with the tense endings and again there are two sets of endings, one set for verbs ending in ar and the other for ir and er verbs.

'Regular' Spanish irregular verbs in the preterite tense:

Enviar (to send)

Yo envi -é (I sent); tú envi -aste (you sent); el/ella envi -ó (he/she sent); nosotros envi -amos (we sent); vosotros envi -asteis (you sent) and ellos/ellas envi -aron (they sent)

Coger (to take)

Yo cog -í (I took); tú cog -iste (you took); el/ella cog - (he/she took); nosotros cog -imos (we took); vosotros cog -isteis (you took) and ellos/ellas cog -ieron (they took)

Salir (to leave)

Yo sal -í (I left); tú sal -iste (you left); el/ella sal - (he/she left); nosotros sal -imos (we left); vosotros sal -isteis (you left) and ellos/ellas sal -ieron (they left)

Unlike the imperfect tense there are a number of verbs that have irregularities in the formation of the preterite tense and to list them all along with their many differences would be too big a job for this article.

The most commonly used irregular past tense verbs in the preterite tense are; estar (to be), dar (to give), haber (to have), tener (to have), poner (to put), hacer (to do,make), poder (to be able to, can), querer (to want), ser (to be), decir (to say) and ir (to go). All of which are very different and will each need learning individually.

Ginseng Differences and Benefits - How to Choose the Best Ginseng for Your Needs

Ginseng is known as an adaptogenic herb. An adaptogen is an herb that regulates and helps the body handle stress and maintain vitality. Adaptogens are used for long term revitalization and not for immediate energy like central nervous system stimulants such as caffeine.

Ginseng is grown in many parts of the world. The roots are the part of the plant used for all Ginseng products. Each variety has its own health benefits. Ginseng benefits are cumulative. Taking the herb for several months to a year is far more effective than short-term doses. Ginsengs are used in many Eastern formulas to complement other herbs.

Korean

Ginseng in general provides energy to all body systems, is a stimulant for brain and memory centers, helps lower cholesterol and regulates sugar use in the body. Ginseng also promotes regeneration from stress and fatigue. All Ginsengs contain measurable amounts of germanium, a trace mineral also in mushrooms.

Panax Ginseng, (Also known as Asian Ginseng, Korean Ginseng, Chinese Ginseng, Ren Shen, Xi Yang Shen, or Say Yang Sum), grown in Korea is the broadest spectrum of all adaptogenic herbs. It is also considered one of the most prized and expensive herbs. Panax ginseng stimulates both long and short-term energy, so is know as a yang tonic replenishing Qi (energy.)

Panax is rich in phyto-hormones for both men and women's problems. For men it helps in the formation of testosterone and for women it protects against breast cancer, hence the term adaptogenic (it will adapt to the needs of the body no matter what is needed and no matter what sex.) For this reason, Panax also fits into the aphrodisiac category. Panax Ginseng is used for enhancing the immune system, impotence and premature ejaculation, poor sleep and nervous exhaustion. It is especially useful for older bodies with debilitating conditions.

Contraindications: Panax, meaning panacea, is NOT universally applicable in every illness like its name implies. Yang Ginsengs should not be taken during acute inflammatory disease or for bronchitis. Use the yin American Ginseng for bronchitis. The yang Ginsengs are used in combination with other herbs to temper their powerful nature.

American Ginseng (Also called Panax quinquefolius, Xi Yan Shen) is a yin tonic. Yin tonics are cooling and slowing in nature. American Ginseng is used in China for fevers and for exhaustion due to chronic wasting diseases. It is also used for coughs related to lung weaknesses (such as tuberculosis, bronchial infections or asthma.)

Siberian Ginseng (also called Eleuthero or Eleutherococcus senticosus) comes from China. It is known for its long-term energy effects on the adrenal glands and circulation. In this day and age, most of our American population is overtaxing their adrenal glands with excess stress. There are just too many tasks enticing us to utilize our available time. We are spending less and less time with our families and doing what nourishes us (our Life Purpose or God Path.) Siberian Ginseng is a yang tonic herb, so it stimulates fast, hot, male energy type of function. Siberian Ginseng has been used for rheumatic complaints, low vitality, and weak liver and kidney energy for about 2000 years. It is considered less heating (less yang) than the Panax varieties (therefore safer.)

I use Siberian Ginseng in my "Old Dog Formula" to increase the circulation to the butt muscles and lower spine. I once had a client who came in regularly for Old Dog Formula for their two very aged shelties. I noticed that they came in a bit more regularly than they should for the dosage I had recommended. When I asked them about it, they confessed that they were also using the product with fabulous results. I like it too and use it occasionally for gardening season.

Panax notoginseng (Also known as Pseudoginseng or San Qi) is grown in China and is used as an analgesic and to stop internal and external bleeding. It is also added to treatments for coronary heart disease and angina. Quite interestingly, San Qi was used extensively by the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam War to increase recovery rates from gunshot wounds. Avoid this one during pregnancy. It could harm the fetus.

Wild Ginseng, from Manchuria, is considered the best, but is extremely expensive. For centuries in the East, top-grade Ginseng roots have been valued more than gold.

Ginseng comes in two varieties, red and white. Red Ginseng is cured by steaming which gives it its color and yang attributes.

So, next time you go to the health food store, don't just ask for Ginseng, be specific.

2011's Ten Biggest, Most Memorable Events

What was the biggest event of 2011? The Japanese tsunami, the US or European debt crises, or the deaths of Osama bin Laden, Kim Jong-Il, Muammar Gaddafi, or even Steve Jobs? Or was it something else?

In a year where the world's population reached 7 billion (October 31), Gregorian Year MMXI has revealed no less hype, drama and tragedy than we're used to seeing. Perhaps in terms of enormity the following ten events can be considered (in reverse 'countdown' order of importance) the biggest, most memorable:

Korean

NUMBER TEN - NASA's Space Shuttle Program Concluded

Atlantis' last, Flight STS-135, concluded the final mission of NASA's Space Shuttle Program when it lands back at the Kennedy Space Center on July 21. 135 missions were flown between 1981 and 2011. Besides its launching of space probes, satellites, and work with the International Space Station, the Program's most memorable legacy might, unfortunately, be the 1986 Challenger and 2003 Columbia disasters.

NUMBER NINE - Twin Terrorist Attacks in Norway

The world is shocked when it learns of the 76 people killed in simultaneous attacks in Oslo and the island of Utoya on July 22. What is designed by the terrorist to divide the country actually unites it-in its grief. It compels many democracies to reconsider their approach to justice for such situations.

NUMBER EIGHT - Steve Jobs' Death

Whilst the death of Steve Jobs (October 5) pales into insignificance when compared with other critical world events for the year, there is no question the impact such a death, and therefore his life, had over the world. Millions of tributes are written as the world laments the passing of a technological genius.

NUMBER SEVEN - Horn of Africa Famine

Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya are entrapped in a famine affecting the livelihoods of nearly 15 million people; the worst in 30-60 years. Various aid agencies work together in the troubled regions to assist as they can, and to promote the plight of these ultra-poor to the comparatively rich Western world. This crisis sickens several seasoned social justice commentators for the sheer size of the famine and resultant desolation and the comparative apathy of the world's response.

NUMBER SIX - Muammar Gaddafi Killed

Reports of the October 20 death of the Libyan dictator stream into lounge rooms. It is a win not only for the local people, but for democracy and hope for the wider region and more global world. Just two months earlier, during the Battle of Tripoli, Libyan rebels ousted Gadaffi's regime.

NUMBER FIVE - North Korean "Dear Leader" Kim Jong-Il Dies

On December 17, North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-Il dies of a heart attack aged 69. News breaks slowly over national television and filters into the international community within 48 hours as many brainwashed North Korean nationals enter into severe mourning. Soon the mooted successor emerges: Kim Jong-Il's youngest son Kim Jong-Un. This event causes widespread interest and concern for regional and global threats because of political instability. A one million strong genocide and a one million strong army are the legacies of Kim Jong-Il.

NUMBER FOUR - US Debt-Ceiling Crisis

In late July, the culmination of 30 years of growing debt, together with the consequences of the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, sees the United States days from bankruptcy; as a result President Barack Obama engineers the Budget Control Act, 2011, into legislature. The US government bond is downgraded for the first time in the nation's history.

NUMBER THREE - Osama bin Laden Killed

What is arguably the biggest event of 2011, for the sheer magnitude of one terrorist's destructive legacy, perhaps the biggest influence over worldwide affairs in the first decade of the 21st century, is finalised on May 1. Bin Laden's death brings an outpouring of emotion worldwide, significantly months before the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

NUMBER TWO - Impending Collapse of the Euro

The economies of Greece and Italy, among others, severely stretch the sustainability of the Euro. Momentous political and economic reforms are made as the Euro system teeters on the brink of collapse, which threatens to drag the world into a prolonged recession.

NUMBER ONE - Japan Earthquake and Subsequent Tsunami

The March 11, 14:46hrs (Japan Standard Time), 9.1 Magnitude Tohoku undersea megathrust quake, with an epicentre 70 km from dry land, at a relatively shallow underwater depth of 32 km, hits the mainland of Japan, via a tsunami, shortly after. The biggest secondary impact is on Sendai and the Fukushima nuclear power plant, initiating a protracted national nuclear emergency. At an estimated economic cost of US5 billion, the World Bank rates it the most expensive natural disaster on record. Almost 16,000 people die, almost 6,000 people are injured, and some 3,600 are listed still missing, from 18 prefectures. Significantly, this earthquake shifts earth minutely off its axis.
