The History of Hyundai

If you live in North America, you likely are now very familiar with the Hyundai line of vehicles. Back in 1986, the first Hyundai was introduced to the market - an Excel - and the company's line up has changed dramatically since that time. Hyundai produces much more than cars; in fact, by the end of the last century Hyundai became one of the largest companies in the world. Let's take a look at this Korean based multinational corporation and the company behind Hyundai vehicles.

It was back in 1946, just one year removed from Imperial Japan's occupation of the Korean peninsula, that a new company was birthed in what is now known as South Korea. Hyundai Motor Industrial Company was founded by Chung Ju-yung, a child of northern Korean peasant farmers, and in 1947 Ju-yung launched a second company, Hyundai Civil Industries. Self educated, Ju-yung transformed the entire Korean economy with the tight control he exerted over his Hyundai companies.

The first Hyundai business was tasked with building automobiles while the second Hyundai company concentrated on construction. Indeed, much of modern South Korea's infrastructure was built by Hyundai in the period after the cessation of the Korean War in 1953 and on through the 1970s. Dams, an expressway, a shipbuilding yard, and a nuclear power plant were all built by Hyundai Civil Industries, while Hyundai Motors produced cars made primarily from Japanese components. Hyundai's influence stretched far beyond the Korean peninsula as the company won contracts to build an expressway in Thailand and a major port in Saudi Arabia. Clearly, Hyundai dominated the Korean market and quickly became a major player on the international scene.

By the 1970s Hyundai began to build vessels as well as shipyards and by 1986 Hyundai produced its first vehicle made entirely from Korean components. From the 1980s forward Hyundai added additional specialties including the building of semiconductors and magnetic levitation trains.

All hasn't been glossy for the company, however. Decades of labor problems culminating in new employee safety standards put in place from the 1990s on, tempered the Hyundai mystique. Indeed, up to that time the company was cited for having the worst safety standards of any corporation in the industrialized world.

Cars were another source of problems for what became known as the Hyundai Group. Although now manufacturing their own vehicles, the quality of Hyundai vehicles for the first decade was considered by automobile experts to be sub-par. Today, Hyundai vehicles and Hyundai parts are, for the most part, slightly above average in quality compared to the industry as a whole.

With Chung Ju-yung's death in 2001, Hyundai was divided up into three separate companies: Hyundai Heavy Industries, the Hyundai Motor Group, and Hyundai Engineering and Construction. Today, all three Hyundai companies continue to compete successfully in the global marketplace thanks to the vision of a peasant farmer.

A History of Flip Flops

Flip flops, also known as thongs, slip slaps, zories, jandals and many other terms, have been around for thousands of years. In fact, a pair made from papyrus and dating back to 1500 BC has been found and depictions of the shoe are found in murals in Egypt over four thousand years old. Normally seen with a single strap between the big toe and the rest of the feet, throughout the years different civilizations placed the strap in different locations. From Greece and Rome all the way through to present day, flip flops have remained a popular choice of footwear. And through all the centuries, the footwear itself has changed very little.

As for modern usage of thongs, they've been a common sight on the beaches of New Zealand since the 1930s. As soldiers returned home from World War 2, the Japanese style enjoyed a short popularity in this country. There is some debate as to just who designed the modern version of flip flops, with both a New Zealander and a British businessman living in Hong Kong laying claim to the title. Whoever was responsible, the shoes were patented and released in the late fifties and went into wide distribution shortly thereafter, rising in prominence in Australia after a debut in the Melbourne Olympics where the Australian swimming team wore them proudly.

In America, it was the Korean War that made flip flops a popular item. Unlike the brief popularity that the shoes enjoyed after WW2, servicemen who returned from Korea brought cheap versions of the shoes home with them. From there, they took off. Initially they were marketed as a facet of the Californian surfer culture, made from rubber and filled with bright colours. Their inexpensive nature and rising popularity helped them appear at practically every beach and pool in the nation. And as their popularity spread, the shoe evolved somewhat. Rubber gave way to bamboo and leather designs but the simple design of the shoe itself remained unchanged.

Today the shoes are still as popular as ever, and even more popular, in fact. Originally a summer shoe, today they are as common as blue jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers. Countless styles exist beyond the basic flat, rubber sandal. Flip flops with heels or wedges, for example, are common, and the material used in the shoe can be practically anything. Three dollar versions can be bought in discount stores, and two hundred dollar designs constantly show up on the fashion runways around the world. Over six thousand years old, flip flops show no sign of waning in popularity.

In 1991, the brothers decided to make a whole sale company since it was becoming difficult for them to keep stock of their highly popular products. David decided to call the new urban clothing label Wicked fashions so as to import clothes from Pakistan for sale in the US. Later, He changed the company's name to Southpole clothing as a tribute to Korean explorers who had reached the South Pole.

Southpole Clothing was successful in establishing its dominance in the market and was able to withstand competition from other companies such as FUBU who were dealing in the same clothing style. Southpole Company was able to establish its dominance by keeping its products cheap while as maintaining their high quality. Due to the use of high quality materials and thread, products from Southpole Company became popular with people in the urban market which saw the company increase its profits.

In 1996, Kenny broke ranks with his brother and he decided to venture into his own business which was focusing on the hip hop style of fashion. David however continued with his venture and today Southpole clothing is still a dominant force in the production of urban ware. The company has been able to reach many cities around the US and it is also venturing into Europe and Asia where it is getting a very good response.

Due to increased demand for urban wear products, Southpole also ventured into the production of other products such as footwear and handbags. Keeping up with the latest trend in the market saw Southpole Company diversify its product line so as to cater for different people who required them. The company also has been involved in collaborating with an advertisement company for creating modeling competition online which has also increased its profitability.
